Program: SAM Aphasia Program

Description of Services: Conversation groups (in-person and virtual) using Supported Conversation Technique (SCA) * run by a speech-language pathologist, communicative disorders assistant, social worker, trained staff, and volunteers * aimed at people living with the impact of aphasia/primary progressive aphasia on their ability to communicate and addresses communication challenges resulting from aphasia as well as potential impacts of aphasia on social isolation and depression * services include:
  • aphasia education and support
  • conversation training for partner, caregiver, friends, and family members 
  • community education and conversation training
  • ongoing social worker access
  • caregiver support

Eligibility - Population(s) Served: Adults 18 years and older who have an acquired communication disorder such as aphasia, apraxia of speech, and/or dysarthria due to stroke, brain injury, or brain illness * must be medically stable and live in the community * must have completed or nearly completed a publicly-funded speech language therapy program * must be willing to participate in supportive conversation groups to improve communication * must be able to participate in a group setting
